Steve Smith
Professional MemberSteve is a practicing UK and European patent attorney with substantial experience in industry (ICI, Zeneca, AstraZeneca) and, for the past 8 years, as a sole practitioner consulting on pharmaceutical technologies to a range of European and UK companies. He is Managing Director of NuPharm Intellectual Property, a company he set up in 2001 to provide IP consultancy services when he retired from AstraZeneca plc where he was Global Head of Patents.
He is a member of the Board of the Intellectual Property Institute and was a member of the Constitutional Affairs Committee of CIPA until his appointment to the Patent Regulation and IP Regulation Boards. He continues to be actively associated with pharmaceutical industry IP organisations such as INTERPAT, for which he is the Director of Secretariat, and has lectured frequently on various aspects of pharmaceutical patent practice. He is a strong supporter of promoting better understanding of the value of IP to society in general and acts (on a pro bono basis) as the webmaster for the IP Awareness Network – www.ipaware.net - for which he represents the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry.
Steve is a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney. He is also a Chartered Chemist, with a BSc (Honours) degree from the University of Nottingham and a doctorate in organic chemistry from the University of Sussex. He lives in Cheshire with his wife Gill where he helps run a small equestrian establishment.
