Lay MemberProfessor Daniel Keenan BSc (Hons), MB, BCh, FRCS, FEACTS.
Danny Keenan is a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon to the Manchester Royal Infirmary, part of the Central Manchester Foundation Trust, and National Clinical Advisor to the Care Quality Commission. Surgically he has a very busy cardiac surgical practice and is co-principal investigator within the cardiovascular research group in the University of Manchester where he holds a personal chair in cardiothoracic surgery.
He has experience in developing, leading and modernising services, with extensive clinical and management experience in the NHS. The use of information to support the provision of high quality services, the development of clinical governance, standards and patient involvement and the development of new services harnessing the multidisciplinary team and streamlining of the patient pathway have been his particular strengths.
He was appointed as National Clinical Advisor to the Healthcare Commission in 2005 and subsequently the Care Quality Commission. He advises on a whole spectrum of clinical activities and provides a focal point for clinical advice and expertise within the Commission, including leadership for the organisation’s clinical staff. He links with the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence in relation to the implementation of guidance.
He is a member of the National Clinical Audit Advisory Group and represents the Commission on the Advisory Board of the National Institute for Health Research.
